Sensitive Teeth is a condition that plagues many an adult patient. Triggered by different temperatures, acidic foods and sweets – Tooth Sensitivity can result in people avoiding their favorite chilled dessert or hot drink.
NW Calgary Dentists at Metro Dental explain that though Tooth Sensitivity can be painful and annoying; it can also be easily controlled and remedied with certain treatments. The first step in preventing tooth sensitivity is maintaining a clean mouth – free from food particles and plaque buildup. Plaque is a bacterial deposit that feeds off food remnants – releasing acids that destroy the enamel and dentin and inflames gum tissue. When the outer tissue of a tooth (enamel) is weakened the tooth loses its thermal protection – making different temperatures a source of stimuli that causes the nerve of the tooth to react.
Dental Decay, Gum Disease, Cracks and Fractures all contribute to a tooth becoming more sensitive. Once the protective tissues of a tooth are damaged the nerve is vulnerable to pressure and temperature inducements – making a tooth react to the slightest change to the oral environment. One of the most common causes of heightened tooth sensitivity is the habit of Clenching and Grinding.
Teeth Grinding can cause different symptoms including headaches, ear pain, jaw discomfort and facial muscle tenderness. The habit of clenching and grinding can also cause teeth to become more sensitive as a result of teeth becoming worn, damaged and shortened. Teeth can also develop cracks and fractures after prolonged clenching and grinding – and the damage to tooth structure makes teeth reactive to pressure and temperature stimuli.
The good news is that tooth sensitivity can be treated regardless of the cause. If teeth have become increasingly sensitive due to a lack of oral hygiene then a dental cleaning is recommended to reduce the levels of bacteria in the mouth. Maintaining adequate oral hygiene will help reduce the risk of teeth becoming sensitive due to gum recession and high levels of plaque. If you’re suspicious that you’re grinding or clenching your teeth, and have noticed your teeth becoming more reactive, follow-up with your Calgary Dentist to discuss the option of wearing a night guard and to check teeth for cracks and fractures.
